Some highlights of the summer program:

  • Promotes wellness with gym time, weight room time, track and field activities, gardening, and walking field trips, including trips to the Farmer's Market to shop for healthy snack ingredients.
  • FLEX is age appropriate. Spaces and activities are designed/planned around the interests and social/emotional development of older youth.
  • The program is youth driven, honoring student "choice and voice". Our staff help oversee committees, but youth decide on almost all aspects of their summer program including Service Projects, Field Trips, Clubs, Snacks, etc.
  • Promotes leadership skills as youth determine how to collaborate together, execute a field trip plan, and navigate through their committee work as a team.
  • Support families with transportation needs. Daily shuttles with convenient morning pick up locations at Oneka, Otter, and Vadnais Elementary Schools.
  • Recognizes and supports older youths' developing independence and sense of responsibility with assorted job rotations, open campus (can ride bikes and sign in/out with parents' permission) and freedom they have not yet experienced in the Extended Day setting.
  • The FLEX Cafe is run completely by the youth. They make a budget and select the products. They learn job skills, money management, and the value of giving back to the community.  Youth determine where FLEX Cafe proceeds are donated.
  • FLEX students spend the summer exploring White Bear Lake! We offer local walking field trips as well as fishing on the shores of White Bear Lake. Students learn local history by visiting White Bear Lake Area Historical Society sites. Students visit the White Bear Press to learn about local happenings.
  • The program is facilitated by energetic, caring and supportive staff who build strong relationships with youth and provide opportunities for students to build on their strengths and successes.
