White Bear Lake Area High School Track and Cross Country Coach Patricia Percival was one of this year's selected Minnesotans to be recognized by the Minnesota Coalition of Women in Athletic Leadership with their Breaking Barriers Award on Wednesday, February 1 at a ceremony at the Minnesota History Center. The coach has dedicated her life to serving as a mentor for many female coaches through her successful career and in service as a physical education educator at White Bear's Central Middle School.

"Patti is a remarkable role model for our students - boys and girls. As a teacher and as a coach, she demonstrates a commitment to every child and athlete, and is able to draw the best from each," said Superintendent Dr. Michael Lovett. "She models self-discipline and determination, but always with respect and encouragement. Coach Percival sees talent in others and helps them believe and grow in confidence."

The Breaking Barriers Award aims to recognize individuals of an organization who have made a positive impact on girls/women sports programs. Percival was an all-state cross country and track athlete at Mounds View and a successful athlete at the University of Minnesota. She continued to share her passion for competition as a coach of middle school, high school and college programs. Percival helped 12 cross country teams qualify for state between Mounds View and White Bear Lake Area High Schools and led Mounds View to two True Team State Track and Field titles.
