White Bear Lake, Minn.- District and state Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) results recently were released to the public, with White Bear Lake Area Schools seeing overall dips in reading, math and science. The district remains above statewide proficiency levels, besting the state by 3.6 percentage points in reading, 6.6 percentage points in math and 6.6 percentage points in science.

"We are doing many things to address individualized student support to be optimistic about the future," said Superintendent Dr. Wayne Kazmierczak. "Assessments of student knowledge are important, and we want to continually improve, but we are focused on more than test scores alone. We are proud to offer comprehensive educational opportunities for well-rounded students."

In recent years, the district has implemented a variety of initiatives to increase student achievement in the long-term. Elementary literacy coaches and instructional technology coaches began working with teachers and students during the 2016-17 school year and will continue in this coming year. Teacher teams also collaborated to analyze student data and adjust instruction based on student needs, a priority that will continue into the 2017-18 school year with staff collaboration time built into the academic calendar. Response to Intervention (RtI) continues to pinpoint gaps in student understanding and address those gaps with research-based interventions.

At the secondary level, students are offered college and career readiness opportunities including career pathways, internships and college-level courses. For 2017-18, Career Pathways programs are available to our high school students in four areas: Manufacturing, Construction, Information Technology and Healthcare. Last year, the number of students in college-level courses went up substantially. Eighty percent of our 2017 White Bear Lake Area High School - South Campus graduates participated in a college-credit bearing course before graduating.

"We remain committed to student success at all levels," said Superintendent Wayne Kazmierczak.
