The play was written by White Bear Lake playwright Claudia Haas. Haas has been writing plays, primarily for teens, for more than 20 years, and her plays have had more than 700 productions in every state in the United States as well as abroad. Director Kari Steinbach has produced other Haas works over the years and has often had her visit her university-level Children's Theatre classes as a guest speaker. Haas also spent time during the rehearsal process with the "Antigone in Munich" cast, talking about her research for the play and answering their questions about the real-life characters they are playing. The play's title refers to the Greek play "Antigone" by Sophocles, which tells the story of Antigone, who defies the law to do what she feels is right. While writing, Haas saw strong parallels between Antigone and Sophie-both young women ask, "What do you do when the laws of man contradict the laws of God?"
